Google is yet to officially unveil Android One smartphones in an event next week but looks like Spice couldn’t wait until then. The Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 is the first Android One smartphone and it is already on sale on Flipkart at a price of Rs 6,999. It features a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display with WVGA resolution, a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB ROM, 5MP primary camera and 2MP secondary camera. who spotted this listing, we now know what to expect from Android One smartphones. As speculated earlier, this smartphone is powered by a MediaTek processor and is sporting stock Android UI. Other Android One smartphones from Micromax and Karbonn might have similar set of hardware specifications. Also, Google might have made it mandatory to include the ‘Android One‘ term on the device and in the name of the device, making its name quite a mouthful.
Spice teased its Android One smartphone yesterday, which would be launched exclusively on Flipkart tomorrow. Few hours back Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498, the company’s first Android One smartphone appeared on Flipkart briefly, before it was pulled. It has a 4.5-inch FWVGA screen, powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat). It has a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
It comes with 35GB of Google Drive storage, Spice Cloud app with 10GB of storage and pre-loaded apps such as Reverie Smartpad, Facebook and more.

The Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 comes in black color and is priced at Rs. 6,999. It will officially go on sale on September 15th at 3:30 PM. Karbonn will launch its Android One smartphone on Snapdeal and Micromax’s smartphone would go on sale exclusively on Amazon.in tomorrow.
Price in India
Spice’s Android One smartphone is priced at Rs 6,299. The Redmi 1S, on the other hand, was originally announced for Rs 6,999, but Xiaomi later slashed Rs 1,000 and it now is available on Flipkart for Rs 5,999.
Display
The Redmi 1S is the only smartphone in this price segment to flaunt a HD display. The Android One Dream UNO Mi-498, on the other hand, lags behind with a FWVGA (854×480 pixels) display. As for size, Spice’s Android One smartphone has a 4.5-inch display, while the Redmi 1S has a 4.7-inch display.
Processor
The Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek quad-core processor, while the Redmi 1S in comparison is powered by a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor. Both the processors are paired with 1GB of RAM.
On the storage front, Xiaomi’s smartphone offers double the storage (8GB) compared to Spice (4GB). Both the devices however have a microSD card slot to expand the internal memory.
Cameras
On the photography front, Spice is offering a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. In comparison, Xiaomi has included an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera. We will however reserve our judgment on which is the better camera, once we have reviewed the Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498.
Battery
The Redmi 1S has a bigger battery in comparison to the Android One Dream UNO Mi-498. Where the former has a 2,000mAh battery, the latter has to do with a 1,700mAh unit.
Software
This is one department where the Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 wins hands down. As a part of the Google Android One initiative, Spice’s smartphone runs on the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and will also get regular Android updates. Xiaomi’s smartphone, on the other hand, runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Though the company has promised a KitKat update, there is no current timeframe.
In terms of specifications, the Xiaomi Redmi 1S blows the Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 right out of the water. It also has the added advantage of a lower price tag. But where Spice’s smartphone excels is on experience. As one of Google’s partners, Spice’s smartphone runs on stock Android and will also get regular software updates.
