Singham Returns Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
What I especially enjoyed in Singham Returns were its stray moments of clever, unexpected humor. Twice our hero takes it on the chin when his girlfriend, and an officer in his team, makes a joke about his age. In another scene, when Gupte’s dhongi Baba rattles off lines from the Bhagwad Gita to him, Singham quotes from the Indian Penal Code in response. At 2 hours and 22 minutes, Singham Returns feels long and occasionally plodding. There are some nice scenes that inspire police pride, but the predictable story tires you out eventually. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

SINGHAM RETURNS provides a voice to the common man and you root for the diligent cop as he wages a war against the crooks. On the whole, SINGHAM RETURNS is a complete mass entertainer with power-packed drama, hi-intensity dialogue and towering performances as its aces. The brand value attached to it coupled with a long weekend will help the film reap a harvest and rule the box-office in days to come. A sure-shot WINNER!

On the whole, Singham Returns is entertainment to the fullest. It will turn out to be a huge hit. It may not be as memorable a film as Singham but it is, nevertheless, an immensely entertaining film and its business will be far, far more than that of Singham. It will definitely prove to be the highest-grossing film of Ajay Devgan’s career so far. Business in Maharashtra will be simply stupendous!

The plot rumbles with action of seismic proportions, shot grandly in signature Shetty style - high-voltage stunts, death-defying combats, men and machines bursting into flames - served bloody, gritty and unadulterated. Shetty's cracked the pulse of the masses as he brazenly plays to the galleries. While the story itself plays it safe (too basic and predictable), the action is risky and rousing. But overall, it provides entertainment for enthusiasts of 'Singham' brand of cinema.

The weakest link is the tedious romantic angle between Ajay and Kareena Kapoor, who plays his gluttonous girlfriend. Kareena’s beauty is startling, but here she’s not even attempting to act. Despite these soft spots, Ajay keeps the film moving. I was cheering for Singham, but ultimately his solutions are downright dangerous. I don’t want to tell you what happens, but it made me very uneasy.

Even if unabashedly playing to the gallery and formulaic to its core, Singham Returns offers quite a bit to whistle about with its steady supply of straightforward action and a hot-headed hero who delivers a punch with a fist and a line. Though marginally better, Singham Returns is plagued by the same problem as the first one. It slows down in the middle to accommodate an obligatory romance with Kareena. Is that good enough? Wrong question. Is it entertaining enough? Er, yeah.

In Singham Returns, the unstoppable protagonist is once again fighting for freedom from the tyranny of the system. Singham Returns has a fair sprinkling of angry wisecracks that might draw spontaneous whistles and loud claps from those that love violent fights to the finish. One can only hope that this is indeed the end, and another sequel isn’t lurking in the future.

The sequel to ‘Singham’ is chock-full of the usual car-on-jeep action. Explosions go off at regular intervals. Shoot-outs—one really well-shot– occur frequently. Like last time, invincible cop Bajirao Singham cracks a carbine single-handedly when the going gets tough. It’s all there, including the strictly kindergarten level plotting.

This film does show the frustration that the police must be going through but there is no way this is going to inspire the real cops. Even if it does, there is little they will be able to do because Singham and his men in uniform are not seen doing much within the confines of the law. The dream team of Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn delivers a good entertainer. It's for fans of brand Singham and I'm sure they are all out there in large numbers.

The story line so simplistic that it turns the otherwise supposedly shrewd villains into bumbling idiots with no set plan in hand and they get caught in Singham’s claws rather too easily. But then the absence of a plausible plot is made up with the adrenalin-pumping , fighting against gravity, whistle worthy action sequences

Shetty puts together a convincing film despite a predictable story of godmen and corrupt politicians which has been seen in Indian cinema over and over again (and probably in better stories) and a plot that unravels a little after the interval.Despite it all Devgn and Shetty should be able to score decently at the box office. Don’t forget this is a film and not real life and don’t question the sequence of events that take place if you want to enjoy it.

Apart from being part-action, part-romantic and part-political, ‘Singham Returns’ is also part-confused..Clearly, Rohit Shetty is attempting to go the extra mile, even though he isn’t putting any thought to it. Skip 'Singham Returns' if you don’t want to lose your mind or if you don’t have the courage to stomach meaningless Bollywood masala films.

Singham Returns scared the daylight out of me. No it wasn’t a horror film, but it shocked me to see a Rohit Shetty film so devoid of fun.  Not novel, frequently bizarre with some really lame vintage jokes to poke fun, the dude can amuse you surely. But when that fun factor is sucked out of his film, assume that something has gone gravely amiss. Singham Returns is a shabby replica of its earlier edition, working on the same contours, never stretching the plotline nor trying anything new.

    5. Rohit has seen flops in his life for your kind information & seen a lot of struggle... he doesn't fake like other directors, which shows in his interviews & work
i'm definitely watching this movie tomorrow and wish the entire team of Singham Returs all the best!
i agree with the above comment... reviews already out before the release of the movie... how pathetic of these people to spread negativity about a movie even before the release... bunch of losers that's it!

    7. Very good effort. You have shown your potential in this effort. You can work over this script to make a full length commercial film. I think the plot has the potential.
Request all the people who comment here to watch and provide your comments here or on YouTube. This will help budding movie makers.

    11. SINGHAM RETURNS:
A pair of earplugs could save a lot for you! Rest is all wasted! [2/5]

The consequences of a film joining the over-hyped ‘100 Cr’ club could be many but one you don’t really want to face in most cases, is its inescapable and obvious sequel. Rohit Shetty’s SINGHAM RETURNS is one of those. As a fellow cop in the team makes it loud and clear soon after hero’s grand entry on screen, “Gaanv se shaher badla hai par apne Bajirao Singham ke kaam karne ka tareeka ab bhi wahi hai”! Translation could read, “Only the locations have been changed and the settings, Singham is all the same”. Spot on! SINGHAM RETURNS is a mindless action entertainer that tickles your heart less and hammers on your head more. I hope it hints you enough to carry earplugs and a couple of pills, in case of severe headache!

The new playground for Bajirao Singham [Ajay Devgn back in his vest & khaki avatar] is the city of Mumbai where corrupt politicians force their own set of rules to rule. An Anna Hazare in disguise idealistic Guruji [Anupam Kher in an extended guest appearance] is unwavering about cleaning the filth called corruption and black money from politics but the evil forces including barely a sketchy politician [Zakir Hussain in his probably most attempted character on screen] and a phony holyman who immediately gets into his cool casuals with a glass of beer in hands when not in some public appearances, have their own vicious plans. Singham returns to fight for freedom, justice and enforcement of law in the system, against these mean minds.

Rohit Shetty’s SINGHAM RETURNS clearly shows his over-confidence in the most usual and sub-standard plot. An honest cop’s frustration and distress while on duty leads him to be transformed into a fearless fighter who can also go beyond law to teach lawbreakers a hard lesson. So far so good! So far some respite! But when you see Ajay devgn mouthing dialogues like, “dhoom machaani hai machao, par bike ki gati [speed] par nahin, desh ki pragati [progress] par”, you sure can guess where it’s going. And SINGHAM RETURNS does that often. Where the first half is quite alike any regular episode of the longest running cop-drama CID on TV [You can also find the loveably single-minded Daya here to act on his favorite, “Daya, Darwaja tod do!”, second half is more of Shetty-special shootouts, blasts and ceaseless gravity-defying goon-bashing sequences.

The other part that doesn’t go well with the film is the love-track! Kareena Kapoor plays Avni who besides dreaming to own a franchise of salon, can be seen frenzied over the idea of her marriage to Singham. It is the least appreciated thing if you have especially come out to see a Rohit Shetty Action entertainer. On the performances, Ajay does what people love to see him doing. A macho man who is invincible, intrepid and heroic in every sense! Kareena irritates, well mostly! Amole Gupte slips into the skin of Chandraswamy like Guru of political influences well and succeeds in providing some not sufficient but good laughs.

At the end, a strict warning for parents! If the child artist’s ‘mala raga gheto hai’ act in Yo Yo Honey Singh’s ‘Aati majhi satakali’ song looks cute to you and your kid, it doesn’t necessarily mean the film is for kids! Stop taking your kids in each and every film you go for! It is like in between those blasting-flying-on fire SUVs in the film, you see a trapped Tata Nano being driven by Ajay Devgn and you go into serious prayers, “No, not this! Don’t! You can’t!” Watch it only if you’re one

    12. @ Divya: thanks! when you say good things about my writing, i definitely feel like going back and read my own review one more time! thank you!

@anonymous: sir, i don't know what exactly it means to be a massy entertainer! Does it have to be mindless? does it need to laugh at people's disabilities and physical appearance? Does it require to showcase women as only the object of desire? Why everything has to be templated? Why can the filmmakers not think ahead of what we have already seen? replicating same old formula only because it could guarantee the moneyback? i don't believe in that.

    13. My review would be in sync... Almost to all the things written by you... Good review... I took my kid along and have decided never to take him to such mindless violent movie... If Singham was liked because of dialogues and some awesome scenes, Singham returns comes back with double the action but less than half the dialogues... I would give it a 1.5... Solely for a few good scenes..

    14. Watched it today morning at PVR. It’s a feel good type or more accurately feel excited type action movie except the time when Mrs. Kareena Kapoor Khan is on screen.
Singham-2 is an extension of the original Singham movie, but this time it’s more of money (/black) over matter. Our hero fights for dignity of Mumbai police dept. as well as for black money. Many a time, the audience connects with his fight for justice but not always like the original Singham. Acting wise, Ajay Devgan, Zakir Hussain and Anupam kher did fine, Amole Gupte gone slightly overboard, Daya is an extension of his CID avatar. Daya has performed his trade mark-Darwaza tod do act par excellence and it’s a moment of applauds too. Thankfully, Kareena’s screen time is too less and that too, totally unnecessary.

It’s the timing of release that mattered and may favour also. Independence day and singular win of Bharatiya Lok Party, both. Most of the scenes are lifted from the recent political happenings in our country and remaining from Singham-1.We almost get a de-ja-vu feeling before someone utters-aata majhi satakli or alli re aali.
Lastly, if Singham went Goa with a 4 star, it returned Mumbai with a 2.75 star.
