Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
Guardians of the Galaxy, based on one of the relatively lesser-known comic books in the Marvel canon, is a very different film from the Iron Man, Thor or Captain America movies. Unlike most superhero films today whose storylines and conflicts are inevitably rooted in the real world, here's a cheerfully silly adventure that prides itself on being an escapist treat. Guardians of the Galaxy feels fresh and zany, and impossibly hard to resist. I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five. As superhero movies go, this one's unique and original. Don't miss it.

Although a team, Gunn gives each Guardian a well-thought-out personality. Refreshingly innovative, delightfully quirky, very well-made and even boundary-bending, the humour keeps rolling with laser-blast frequency in this wildly imaginative and thoroughly entertaining film. The screenplay is tighter than a racetrack with hairpin turns, but the narrative does have a few fissures. Despite these chinks, the charming performances, strange characters (don't miss Del Toro as The Collector), spaceships and of course, the 70s soundtrack (a highlight by itself) make this one a heck of an intergalactic romp.

The plot is simplicity itself, involving jailbreaks and chase scenes and a stolen orb and seemingly impossible missions, all of which sounds like (and, admittedly, is) regular superhero movie hokum. Except Gunn throws it together with a lighthearted, Pixarry swiftness, giving us a refreshingly frothy ride with genuinely memorable characters. Guardians Of The Galaxy takes place in a remarkable world drawn lovingly and beautifully by imaginative folks low on skin-coloured crayons. A world that holds not merely quirks but nuances. These are worth beholding, worth gawking at. These are… marvels.

With the arrival of James Gunn’s terrific Guardians of the Galaxy, Space Opera fans have a gigantic reason to cheer. Not only is Guardians one of the year's most exciting and entertaining movies, but is indeed the Star Wars for this generation.Director Gunn must be one hell of a Marvel fan and comic book geek. He has followed up the half a dozen Avengers universe films and delivered a relatively unknown property with such gloriously fantastic style.

In my opinion this is the best Marvel film made till date, even better than the Avengers. Now, I say that because of what Gunn had to work with, and how he not only made 'Guardians' take off, but how he made it soar. You will definitely want to catch this one, trust me, it's going to make your favourite list too. Also, don't forget to wait for the post-credit scene.

This is one brilliant shout-out to the funny side of comics. It is a showcase of what happens when you are left to be crazy with material. The heroes are funny, flawed and fantastic to watch. The bad guys are ridiculously bad but hey, we finally got bad guys whom we love to hate. The visuals are stunning to say the least. This is one of those films where a bunch of relatively unknowns make it big. It is an epic metaphor (again, another little joke from the movie). Don’t miss it on the big screen.

    2. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: "THE MOST AMAZING MARVEL MOVIE YET"
      (4.5/5)

Yes, you heard me correctly. "The Avengers" is now no more the best Marvel movie, but it's outcrossed by GOTG. What a Marvellous experience it was. Just Outstanding.
The Underdogs aka the Guardians- Chris Patt as Star Lord (EQ high but super Cool), Zoe Saldana as Gamora (Terrific), Vin Diesel as Groot(Limited Vocabulary but most memorable character), Bradley Cooper as Rocket(Smart & Hilarious) & Dave Bautista as Drax(Funny), outcast the Avengers. The plot is simple but the Director rocks. James Gunn deserves great applause for giving us a thoroughly entertaining, memorable and a delightful experience.
Predictability is close to zero %. Till the very last minute, you are engaged in the story. Editing is another great fact. Just 121 minutes and it's like an incredible journey into the space. This is actually the Star Wars for this generation. Jackpot for the space opera lovers. The action is innovative and visually stunning. There is lot of detailing. The second viewing might help. You never will be able to get your eyes away from the screen.
The 3D adds so much depth that it's highly recommended you watch it with Glasses only. Especially Imax 3D.
Complaints regarding weaker villains can now rest since this time it's real baddies at play.
At last, about the soundtrack- YOU WILL LOVE IT! IT'S THE SOUL OF THE MOVIE.

So, what you guys waiting for.
Go and catch these very lovable Guardians of the Galaxy ASAP on the big screen and get lost.

      TRULY MARVEL :-) :-) :-) [4.5/5]

    3. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY:
      Humorously heart-warming Superhero Film! MARVEL-ous! [4/5]

Confidence is the outfit superheroes sport full of grace. Superheroes act smart and in a much designed manner. Superheroes don’t really have a plan B because they don’t really need. Superheroes master in channelizing their angst against the rival forces. Superheroes have it in them and it shows. But the people we are talking about here, them ain’t superheroes. Not even close. They are just a bunch of losers. The definition can be wisely lightened to ‘the ones who have lost something or the other in life’; in case you really want to make them feel less humiliated. Still, they are the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY…and as a film; this is no less than any superhero movie at any level.

    4. Based on Marvel Comics’s lesser known characters, James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is a pleasant surprise disguised as a superhero film. The similarity and likeness in the settings and visuals don’t go out of sight but the soul and the inner spirit of the film take a sharp turn at being not just a heart-thumping, nerve-wrecking and extensively jam-packed with heavy visual effects but a humorously heartwarming film that constantly & effortlessly lets you stretch your facial muscles.

In a deserted planet; named Morag if you are really bothered, Peter Quill [played by Chris Pratt] is a space outlaw with a self-proclaimed arty name StarLord. In order to make his name in the business, he gets into the theft of a mysterious orb from evil forces, a serious threat to the existence of the galaxy. Proceedings in the plot lead him to a prison where he bonds with an alien-girl Gamora [Zoe Saldana], the huge-heartless and mechanical Drax the Destroyer, an ill-mouthed aggressively violent but hilarious raccoon Rocket [Bradley Cooper lends his voice] and my personal favorite, a walking tree who talks only as much as ‘I am Groot’ [the heavy gritty voice of Vin Diesel]. Now, together they need to emerge as the guardians of the galaxy but looking at each one’s flaws, aren’t we asking for too much?

Based on Marvel Comics’s lesser known characters, James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is a pleasant surprise disguised as a superhero film. Quill’s fascination with 80’s pop songs on his Sony walkman fills a hypnotic background score in the numinous outer space. His mentions of Kavin Bacon and his pelvic move in FOOTLOOSE, Drax’s one-track mind full of vengeance and nothing else in the planet, Rocket’s sarcastically grave attitude and Groot-the talking tree’s all time verbal communication restricted to just ‘I am Groot’ are some of the highlights that will leave you in splits. The slow-motion shots of heroic appearances by Rocket and the no-gravity space acts are incredible.

Overall, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is a superhero film that stands out from the rest because of its feeble, flimsy yet charmingly colorful characters true to their hearts. They may not look a perfect team. They may unapologetically show off their flaws but together, they give you a MARVEL-ous time to be experienced on the big screen. Go for it! [4/5]
