Baby Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Review By:  Shubhra Gupta Site:Indian Express
‘Baby’ is a perfect vehicle for the times we live in: it gives us a home-spun hero who allows himself to be hurt but is invincible, and an enemy who is the easiest to demonise. The film is as simplistic as its title – Us vs Them, and no prizes for guessing who will win. In a messy world, where each action can have an equal and opposite reaction, what is the point of complexity?

The first half of Baby makes you feel you are Rakesh. But when you make it till the film ends, you will feel happy that you sat through the torture in the first half. The second-half, especially the climax is where the film has scored well and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Pandey’s Baby, one must say, wouldn’t have been as interesting without the lead troika. Go watch Baby for Akki-Kher-Danny troika

Baby, written and directed by Neeraj Pandey, is a tricky film in more ways than one. It might have been hailed as just another innocuous, smartly-packaged, competently shot espionage thriller if only the politics at its heart not been so dangerously dodgy. The point that Baby seems to make is that it isn't just trained killing machines, but also the nation as a whole, that can, and should, do 'anything', collateral damage be damned.

Watched Baby. O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G. Neeraj Pandey proves his prowess yet again. Brilliant cinema!Baby is Akshay's best work. Rana Daggubati, Anupam Kher, Danny, Taapsee, Kay Kay, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Rasheed Naz - each actor is first-rate. Baby has engaging 1st half and a superb 2nd. The last 40 minutes are nail-biting with an edge of the seat finale. You just can't miss it.

Balancing characters, conspiracies and cities, director Neeraj Pandey admirably keeps Baby rich, yet tight, researched, non-sentimental and steely-eyed. Neeraj's craft has grown - he's taken trademark touches from films like Special 26 and A Wednesday, setting them here on a grand scale, with a breath-taking climax. The cinematography - desert dunes in nothing but shaded moonlight - is elegant while dialogues are robust. One of Baby's crew tells Ajay, "Tension kya lena? Ulta, aapke rehte, mazaa aata hai."Quite. This Baby's day out is deadly good fun.

On the whole, BABY is one of the finest films ever made in the history of Indian cinema. Not only because of its excellent cinematic credentials but also because of the balanced 'Thought' behind the film. Neeraj Pandey once again proves that he's a genius. This time he proves, it's possible to better Perfection. We say, hey baby, don't think, just go for BABY. Cinema at its very best!

The film works on many levels; effective lines, some laced with dead-pan humour (written by Neeraj Pandey), the break-neck pace, near-perfect casting and minimal melodrama. Akshay Kumar scores with his understated performance and a body language that's a perfect fit for an 'emotionless' cop with a single minded focus. Two minor complaints. Wish they had gone easy on the background score. Also, a glaring loophole involving a laptop belonging to a terrorist. Please watch this movie.

It’s an out an out Neeraj Pandey film. Baby hands down comes out as of the best films when it comes to mixing a subject like terrorism. It is like an Indian version of Body Of Lies.Baby is a definite watch for anyone who likes action thrillers. With an edge of the seat course of story, it is a treat with its dialogues too.

Dolly Ki Doli  Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:1.5/5 Review By:  Shubhra Gupta Site:Indian Express
‘Dolly Ki Doli’ has a great idea, and starts off well, but then falls into a familiar trap– of a single-track leading lady piloting a half-baked plot. But the plotting and the treatment of the character shows up Kapoor’s limitations : she is good-natured, but not versatile. Ultimately, ‘Dolly Ki Doli’ is neither biting social comment, nor unfettered fun.

With its winsome ensemble of actors, background actors and walk-in parts, the lighthearted caper radiates an attractive energy that’s pleasant to be around even if hardly profound. Moreover, Dolly Ki Doli goofs on the coy dulhan stereotype with such wicked relish it never gets dull.

There is much to like in Dolly Ki Doli. Or, let us put it this way: there isn't much to dislike in Dolly Ki Doli. Dolly is a rebel all right, but the precise motivations for her battle against the established social order never emerge with clarity. As a result, the character remains a blurry blob as she takes one man after another for a ride. But for all its obvious flaws and failings, Dolly Ki Doli is not completely unworthy of the 100 minutes that it demands from the audience..

But the problem with Dolly Ki Doli is that it does not give a plausible ending to the story. Dogra, who co-wrote Dolly Ki Doli with Uma Shankar Singh, did have an interesting plot -- the journey of a girl who takes on the bad world of men and the hypocrite institution of marriage. But why does she do it? That is exactly where Dogra's script fails. So should you watch Dolly Ki Doli? Go for it, for the entertaining performances. Despite the shoddy script and loose strings, this is worth a watch.

Debutant director Abhishek Dogra's con-bride story is simple and refreshing. It's filled with some laughable moments, hilarious performances and quirky characters. There aren't too many highs or dramatic turns; Dolly's past story is unconvincing and her track with Pulkit is the weak link in the plot. The climax is a sweet surprise, so hold on for it. After wedlocks across the country, there's only one faint picture of Dolly's shaadi? Really? What's 'app', guys?

On the whole, DOLLY KI DOLI is a stress buster that will make you smile as you'll leave the theatre. Debutante director Abhishek Dogra has competently extracted superb performances from the entire starcast. The unpredictable climax of the film works to the advantage too. But the four day weekend will help this Dolly ensnare many patrons. The word of mouth will be the key in witnessing the growth. We say, it's a roller coaster entertainer. Enjoy it with your families.

Dolly Ki Doli is a simple-n-sweet entertainer that promises fun and laughter in those 1.40 hours. Tight screenplay. Competent direction. Dolly Ki Doli also works because of wonderful performances by Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma.

Dolly Ki Doli is a time-pass entertainer that you can enjoy if you keep your brains at home. This film comes as a breath of fresh air from all the South remakes and thought-provoking dramas that are most oftenly served. After particularly loving Varun Sharma’s comic antics and Rajkummar Rao’s sheer genuine acting, I am going with a 2.5/5 for this peppy film.
