Qissa Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:4/5 Review By:  Saibal Chaterjee SiteNDTV
In a world in the grip of growing religious intolerance and rampant sectarian violence, and in a country that still has to constantly remind itself of the need to save its daughters, Qissa has unmistakable resonance. But the film is provocative poetry, and not preachy polemic, which makes it a true work of art. Qissa is that rare cinematic treat that no genuine film lover should deprive himself/herself of.

Qissa is ‘dastaangoi’, and much more than that. One of the best films in recent times, it’s an experience not to be forgotten easily. Your experiences in life will decide your views towards the film and vice-versa. We are going with 4.5 for Anup Singh’s idiosyncratic drama Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost.

Qissa is a painful story dealing with issues of identity crisis and is particularly hard-hitting. The raw nature of this film is not meant for everyone and so watch this film if you want to see something meaningful.

Badlapur Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:4/5 Review By:  Raja Sen Site:Rediff
Badlapur is all fury and fog, a revenge saga that plays out with such eyebrow-singeing intensity that I could imagine a gravel-voiced narrator filling us in on dames and dreams and dark, stormy nights. As the curtain falls on Badlapur, any argument on rightness feels both moot and muddy. This is a noir world, its aftertaste like chocolate with 85% cocoa, and the answer is deceptively simple: Who gets right of way? The one in a greater hurry.

Sriram Raghavan's neo-noir crime thriller is about vengeance and forgiveness all right, but one thing that the film isn't is conventional. Badlapur toys with many shades of grey, significantly enhancing the effect of its pivotal dramatic conflict. In conclusion, Badlapur might not be in the Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddar league, but it is a happy sign that Sriram Raghavan has left Agent Vinod behind.

Badlapur is a gobsmacking movie that suffuses on screen - a deftly written story, spectacular performances and an intelligently layered screenplay. What works best here is the film's unpredictability. From the minute it begins, you're latched to your seat with your heart throbbing in your mouth and your throat frequently choking up. For the sheer impact the movie conjures up, writer-director Sriram Raghavan deserves a bow

This film has some amazing moments and a lot of credit goes to the director and his actors. Raghvan gives them an open field to perform and show their best skills, the magic is obviously in the writing. If you enjoy thrillers then you shouldn't miss Badlapur, you get the watch the best of Varun and Nawaz.

While the first half keeps you firmly in its grip, the second half starts meandering a little till it captures you back with an absolutely unforeseeable climax. What you mainly take away from this movie is its core; a story (written by Sriram Raghavan) that tells us that most often the situation is the villain. And, perhaps, each of us is capable of turning a criminal when faced with an extreme situation.

On the whole, BADLAPUR offers you cinematic excellence with a rider that there's violence and gore, which may not be everyone's cup of bitter coffee. You shall be treated to truly unforgettable performances by Nawazuddin and Varun Dhawan. It is a film that will find patrons amidst the multiplex crowd. And yes, it is a film that will continue to live-on in the minds of cinema lovers for a long time to come.

Badlapur is a complete performance driven film. It is one of the best neo-noir representation in Indian cinema. Badlapur is not everyone’s regular coffee, it’s black coffee! This film deals with dark humor and so if your taste buds can enjoy bloody revenges, you will savor this as a delicacy.

The Expendables 3 Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
There's a videogame-like quality to the relentless action in this film; it's noisy and unending, but also shrewdly bloodless, possibly so the makers could secure a more lenient rating from the censors. Alas, these are small mercies in a disappointing film that might have benefitted from investing more in script rewrites than star salaries. I'm going with a generous two out of five for The Expendables 3. Its nostalgia value aside, this is one noisy bore.

Expendables 3 brings together almost every Hollywood action star you've seen on screen from the 1980s and 1990s and gathers them together in a movie that has all the finesse of a tank and a helicopter in a glorious head-on collision. The barely-there plot seems like an afterthought, almost like a token concession given to the main thrust of this movie, which is really all about dishing out some good ol' school mayhem. While an ensemble cast is indeed impressive, you might feel that so much more could have been done with the story in terms of excitement. While the action is indeed high gear, the gore (evidenced in the previous film) is turned down a notch. Nonetheless, it does serve up a decent chunk of old-school action.

There is a lot of action, and some interesting stunts. But they don’t seem to be having fun anymore. Everyone seems tired. The jokes too. I may have issues with the third installment but the joy of watching these heroes together on screen is a movie event marked in my calendar until they keep making them.

The plot is thin, sure. Predictable maybe, but the execution is good. We have Ford making his mark as a pilot who was a hotshot and he is still top gun. Remind you of someone? The movie takes you on a ride and doesn’t stop till the last bullet is fired and the last corny joke is cracked. As you might have guessed, it is Stallone who gets it. But hey, we’ve got to admit, from a bunch of has-beens, we get a not-so-subtle-reminder that they are the ones pushed, the ones who got up after being knocked down, the ones who fought for the little guys. All in all, a watchable movie with the action building till the very end.

Mardaani  Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
Mardaani is not a perfect film, but it's better than many of the blockbusters Bollywood churns out regularly. It's a well-made commercial Hindi film - reasonably short and minus songs - that's trying to say something. For that I'm going with three out of five. Whatever else, you won't be bored.

MARDAANI grabs your attention from the commencement and never relents. Padding the proceedings with several intense episodes, MARDAANI eventually becomes the good versus evil fight as the protagonist makes her way to the baddie behind the baddies. On the whole, MARDAANI is relevant, powerful and inspiring with a top notch performance by Rani Mukerji. Worth a watch!

While there is nothing in the plot that you haven't seen before, it is still watchable for the superb performance of Rani. This movie could have continuous recall had the pace been racier. And if you could also buy into the emotional tracks between Shivani and her husband, her niece or her ward. Also, Rani is the only member of the cast with star value. The rest of the actors, including the English-speaking young goon, are inconsequential.

On the whole, Mardaani is too ordinary a film for an emotional and disturbing issue like sex trafficking. It leaves the viewer unaffected and fails to inspire the women to revolt, which is what the film ought to have done. At the box-office, it will not be able to make its mark. A section of the evolved and women audience will like it for the intention behind the film but that won’t be enough for the film to succeed at the ticket windows.

What it really is though but a middling action thriller engaging a cat-and-mouse game between a shrewd crime branch officer (who happens to be a woman) and a demented young man running a vast human trafficking business. Mardaani is a bland version of Liam Neeson's Taken. If only the script weighed more in intensity of thoughts than stagy heroics and simplistic resolutions, it could do a lot more for women in the film industry if not society in general.

Mardaani is more in the nature of a police procedural drama than a stunt film about a comic strip cop in which exploding cars and pummeled bodies are flung about in the air like a whole lot of pillows. Because Shivani Shivaji Roy is not your average action ‘hero’, she might not appeal to Dabangg junkies. But for everyone else, Mardaani could be well worth a trip to the multiplex.

After the interval, the filmmakers throw all restraint to the wind. Shivani is pushed into becoming a one-woman squad, turning into the male version of the movie cop that’s only right for comic-book treatment in bad 80s’ reboots. Cue swelling background music-and- rousing-songs, and we see Rani Mukerji lit up from the back, walking slo mo down a dingy corridor. That’s called curdling credibility.

Mardaani is a crime drama, which is packed with action and thrills. Rani Mukerji plays a tough cop who does her job with her heart and mind. She puts in her blood and sweat to bust a human-trafficking racket. The show she puts together on the big screen is simply awesome!Book your tickets for Mardaani and watch Rani Mukherji in action. She will blow your mind!

Mardaani is a movie that despite an unimaginative plot and predictable narrative engrosses you in its fabric. Rani Mukerji is pitch perfect in the role of a super-cop that is rightly hued, far from the floss and swagger of Chulbul Pandey and Singham. She is real, gritty and every bit brilliant. Though the film’s climax loses itself in melodrama, this is a film that has its heart in the right place and tells a pertinent story at a time when it must be heard.

Mardaani is a fair attempt to address an important issue of child trafficking.  There are no unnecessary twists and turns, convoluted flashbacks or, worse, forced item numbers in the end. Simple, straight screenplay. Mardaani is a more commercial, less disturbing version of Nagesh Kukunoor’s Lakshmi. The film could be too simplistic for many, but doesn’t offend you or underestimate your IQ. Watch it once. It won’t hurt.

Mardaani is not in the same league as ‘Kahaani’ or ‘English Vinglish’, but it still deserves applause for attempting to portray a movie minus Bollywood's trademark frills. Even when the inspiring story crumbles towards the end with unnecessary melodrama and a corny monologue, Rani flaunts her finest act. Yet, this isn’t at par with ‘Kahaani’ or ‘English Vinglish’, only because writer Gopi Puthran reduces ‘Mardaani’ into an unimaginative mess by trafficking in the usual tropes of supercops and psychotic baddies without giving the tale a wicked twist.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Hindi Movie Reviews

Ratings:3/5 Review By: Madhureeta Mukherjee Site: Times Of India (TOI)

The strength of Shashank's debut film (tribute to 'DDLJ') is the performances and characters, whether it is Humpty-Kavya's cutesy, charming chemistry or the unbeatable boy-gang bonding with Shonty and Poplu. Unlike the characters, the story doesn't enthuse or grow beyond the original plot, but it's pinned with warm, delightful moments and laughable dialogues. HSKD has plenty of feel-good moments, but nothing that will leave you punch-drunk. For romantics who believe in their dils and their dulhaniyas - and the quintessential 'Ja, jee le apni zindagi'! - it's a sweet watch (beware the sugar rush!).

HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a quintessential Bollywood romance and ticks all the customary boxes that make a love story work. Yet, Shashank Khaitan makes sure the screenwriting incorporates several amusing and compelling episodes that steer clear of rusty formulas that we are used to watching in films of this genre. Shashank also steers clear of full-scale melodrama, loud and familiar masala and earsplitting background score, which could've seeped in naturally, given the genre of the film. He keeps it subtle, but makes sure the film wins you over. On the whole, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a beautifully textured love story that wins you over. There's no stopping this one from hitting the bull's eye. Sure-shot winner!

Never has Bollywood seen a romance like this. Where a pretty girl leaves home in pursuit of a perfect wedding gown, and wins a handsome lover in the bargain. Yes, director Shashank Khaitan’s chaotic love story is more about finding the perfect ‘lehenga’ and less about love.Despite some good performances and a few wonderfully written lines, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ stops from being an endearing tale of love, because it blindly piggybacks on the classic without any heart or logic. It’s much ado about a lehenga!
